In the realm of medical innovation and translational research, C-TRIC stands as a beacon of success. Founded in 2008 on the premises of Derry-Londonderry’s Altnagelvin Hospital, the Clinical Translational Research and Innovation Centre embodies a unique collaboration between Ulster University, the Western Health and Social Care Trust, and Derry City and Strabane District Council.
The idea for the state-of-the-art translational and clinical research centre resulted from a discussion about funding. Initially, the unique concept behind the centre was difficult to sell to funding bodies. This changed as soon as blueprints were drawn up for the actual centre, which enabled the unique delivery structure underpinning C-TRIC to be fully explained and made real.
The journey of C-TRIC from its inception to its current stature is not merely a tale of perseverance but also a testament to the power of effective strategies. Let’s delve into the pivotal moments of its evolution and how strategic initiatives played a crucial role in its success.
Overcoming Funding Hurdles
Invest Northern Ireland and Ilex assisted in securing the first stages of funding for C-TRIC. Partner organisations also provided much-needed support in the early period. However, this early period of the centre’s existence was difficult as finances were tight.
Nowadays, C-TRIC is a limited company with an experienced team headed up by Dr Aaron Peace and a Board of Directors. C-TRIC’s dynamic approach and unique vision have created an innovative and state-of-the-art working environment in which clinicians, researchers, and commercial business interests in the field of biotechnology can collaborate.
Infrastructure, Innovation, and Growth
C-TRIC boasts a fully equipped suite of facilities at its Altnagelvin Hospital site. These include clinical consultation rooms, a specimen reception area, a biomedical sciences laboratory, a clinical research office, and a clinical material storage facility. C-TRIC is also able to assist with the design of clinical trials and studies, geospatial mapping, and the analysis of statistics.
This unique centre is an incredible boost to Derry-Londonderry’s medical infrastructure. It also secures the city’s place at the cutting edge of healthcare, medical innovation, and translational clinical research.
